At Legacy Planning Group, LLC, we have been providing thoughtful and insightful financial guidance to our clients for over 26 years.  Our services range from managing our clients’ 401(k) assets, assisting with IRA rollovers, managing individual and estate accounts, to assisting Military and Merchant Marines (particularly MEBA union members) plan for their retirement.   We also work with several local family law and business attorneys to help their clients who may be going through a divorce or planning for their future.

I earned my undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a focus on economics from Old Dominion University.  I also attended Depaul University's School of Continuing and Professinal Studies and received my certificate in Financial Planning.

Many people have sought my financial knowledge beyond my clients. Several publications, including The Virginia Pilot newspaper and the monthly Lifestyles 50+ for the Active Adult, have carried several articles on financial estate planning and retirement investing that I have authored.

I am a veteran of the U.S. Navy who served my country aboard nuclear submarines from 1981 to 1993. After my service, I played “Mr. Mom” for my daughter, Ansley, when she was 2 through 5 years old, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

In April 1997, I started working for the big financial advising firms and then realized they benefited more from my work than my clients did. So, in 2002 I founded Legacy Planning Group, LLC, in order to help more people pursue their dreams. Others work for a company. As an independent, I work for my clients.

Away from work, I enjoy playing tennis, traveling, gaining wisdom from reading inspirational and motivational biographies, engaging in great discussions with passionate people, teaching a pro bono financial education class at a local university, and honing my culinary talents. I do the latter while trying NOT to have a visit from the local Hook and Ladder Company #8. My family consists of my wife Kim; our energized 15-year-old son Brayden; and my now-grown 33-year-old daughter, who lives in San Diego, California.

A fun fact to add: I was fortunate enough to have “The Red Rocker,” Sammy Hagar, former lead vocalist for Van Halen, sing at my 37th birthday party in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.


Sharing and Helping Others in the Hampton Roads Area is My Passion.

While I love working with my clients, I have strong commitments to serving my community through various nonprofit organizations. I am a charter member of the Professional Advisory Committee for the United Way of South Hampton Roads Foundation on Charitable Giving as well as a Leadership board member of the American Diabetes Association. Additionally, I have worked on the Charitable Planning Committee for the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters (CHKD).

My proudest business achievement has been as an officer and board member for the Norfolk Cosmopolitan Club of Norfolk, whose main focus is raising money to help find a cure for diabetes. As a board member of the club’s Cosmopolitan Diabetes Foundation, we helped start the Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) Strelitz Diabetes Research Center in Norfolk by raising $1.2 million to open its doors.

Why Fee-Based

Our unique focus is on the emotional side, the heart of what drives my clients for their financial decisions, over generating money for myself. As a financial advisor, I strive to increase return on life for all of my clients, instead of numbers, profits and my personal gains. I am a fee based advisor and compensated on your assets that I have under management, sometimes called (AUM).  So, when your investment assets with me goes up I get a pay raise and when your assets with me go down I take a pay cut.  So our interest are aligned, and you never have to worry since I do not take any commissions for managing your investment portfolio.

Legacy Planning Group, LLC is an independent fiduciary and fee-based Advisory firm. This means that we take fiduciary responsibility to put the best interest of our clients first. 

Our Process

To work most effectively, we use the following five steps with clients:

  • We hold our first meeting to see if we are a good fit. Ideal clients are concerned with more than just return on investment for their financial future. We just talk, and I'll ask questions like, “What's in your bucket list?" and "What are your hobbies?" to get to know you better.

  • If we click, we'll hold a second appointment talking about your goals, interests and objectives. This is where you bring in important documents like statements and policies to share or upload them to  our online portal
  • 3
  • We will craft a tailored financial plan and review it with you to check if we are on the same page.

  • Once all parties approve the plan. we begin to implement our recommended investment process with full fee disclosure and transparency.

  • Every year, we will adjust your plan on how to proceed toward your changing financial and life goals. And we will be with you every step of the way!
